Jeroen D’hoe is professor of contemporary-classical composition at Campus Lemmens (LUCA School of Arts, Belgium) and of pop and jazz at Musicology (KU Leuven, Belgium).
As a composition professor at Campus Lemmens (LUCA School of Arts), Jeroen D’hoe’s pedagogical approach pursues an enriching cross-fertilisation between artistic creativity (teaching composition and coaching interdisciplinary creation projects) and academic-theoretical musicological research. His teaching methods reflect a unique synergy between the artistic practice-oriented context of the art college and the theoretically- and research-oriented approach of the university. These surprising interactions not only offer students new insights but also challenge them to “position themselves consciously in the artistic world”. He encourages students to engage in a profound exploration of the relationship between their artistic practice and artistic and academic research. This integration inspires students to further develop their own unique voice. D’hoe’s teaching philosophy places an emphasis on the value of creativity and critical thinking. As a result, his students are not only encouraged to achieve musical/artistic excellence, but are also enriched intellectually and personally.
Similarly, as a professor of pop and jazz at KU Leuven, Jeroen D’hoe is bringing a refreshing dynamic to his pedagogical approach. His classes emphasise historical and aesthetic knowledge, combined with the textual and musical analysis of pop and jazz (academic approach). D’hoe’s approach is thereby enriched by his own experience as a songwriter, arranger, producer and pianist in various pop/crossover projects. This practical experience enables him to feed academic-theoretical musicological research with valuable insights from his own artistic practice. This encourages students not only to study pop and jazz, but also to understand the deeper layers and connections within the genre, and its historical and societal contexts, significantly deepening their understanding and appreciation of pop and jazz and of pop culture.
